404 Error - Old Pages

Y

yogalady

I re-published my site three weeks ago.
The web statistics provided by the host show 404 errors that refer to pages
I do not have any more, but were parts of my previous website version.

Some 404 errors even point to pages that I removed half a year ago.

How can this be?

People and search engines still cache and try old links. I still get 404
errors from individuals or search engines (based on browser strings)
looking for pages that disappeared from my site 3 *years* ago.

They will be linked somewhere. Do some 301 redirects to similar pages, if
not thats applicable point them to the homepage.

Hi Tina,

How would I do this?

I went to hostmonster's control panel, found an icon named "Error Pages,"
clicked on it, found a list of common error codes, clicked on 404, and ended
on a page that allows me to edit the error pages by inserting provided tags
(referring URL, visitor's IP address, requested URL, server name, visitor's
browser, redirect status code).

Am I on the right track or is this something else?
If I am on the right track, what do I do next?

Is your host a unix or a windows host? Unix it will be easy enough to do.
