Does anyone know hoe to tag images in Word? I know it's possible as a PDF but my client needs it in Word, any thoughts? It's to make the document 508 Compliant.
Thanks!

It would appear that if you use Word correctly to produce a document, then
you "have" complied.

There's a blurb about it here:
http://www.hhs.gov/web/policies/pdfaccessibility/step2.html

It does not seem to require anything more than normal professional Word
usage. I assume you are already doing all this stuff as part of your normal
use of Word. So basically, you don't have to do "anything" :)

Cheers

Thanks for your input. I made the mistake of not informing that I have 3 logos on the page, per requirements of the client, and that is where the reader is getting "stuck".

Hi Jessica;

Unfortunately you're running up against one of the Win Word features that
hasn't made it to the Mac as yet - Alt (alternative) Text. It's topic "C" in
the article John referred you to.

I'm not sure whether the use of more descriptive captions would be an
acceptable substitute - in some cases it is, but in most cases not. Perhaps
someone else may have other possibilities or a workaround to offer.

Thanks Bob. Do you know if it's possible on a PC Platform? I do have access to Word on a PC.

I did discover that on a Mac, turning on the text to speech does work. However, the text needs to be highlighted and it skips over logos because there seen as images. I've also discovered that it does not read text in the Header/Footer. Is this the same for a PC? Is there a 508 Compliance checker/reader in Word? I have not found an option to have it read it back to me to see the results.

Thanks for the help!

No checker, but the Alt Text is in the PC version - that's what the screen
shot on the web page was showing... Word 2000 (I believe) or later.

I'm afraid I don't have an answer to your other questions.

Thanks for all your help! I guess I'm going to have to use a PC in this case. Thanks! Jessica

Will the text to speech read a text box? If so, could a text box with
white or "invisible" text be placed directly behind the logo so that the
text box was read by the screen reader? Just a thought.

You can simply edit the HTML source in Word and add them, as explained here:
