97 Office Pro Update Ser. Pack SR-2b

I have updated my Office 97 with both Ser. Pack SR-1 and
SR-2a, but 2b initializes and then has a problem and
refuses to complete. I have tried several times. It claims
that I do not have 97 Office installed or have multiple
versions of some of the products. It states that I should
rerun SR-1 to fix the problem, but that did not fix it.

I know that it is a PITA but I would totally uninstall 97 and reinstall.
The order of installation should be the original CD. If SR1 is not included
on the CD, install it next then go right to SR2b. 2b has the fixes that
were included in 2a.

Let me know if this works.

I removed everything including my new Microsoft Mess. Then
did the "Typical" install, and the SR1 and MS DRaw 98
(both seemed to finish too fast). Then the SR-2b. It again
would not finish.
I had an older machine where I originally installed the
Office 97 Pro. I copied all the updates on CD and from
there into C:\Office 97 Update (It is also an Win ME
machine). There the updates worked fine. That machine does
not have an updated MS Explorer. Could that be the
difference?

I have noticed in the past that MS does a poor job of
programming. Once the SR-2b was already installed once,
the update never again asked for the key-code and thus
bypassed some important code in the program that told it
what to do. I again uninstalled everything. Then deleted
the Office directory and the Office Update directory. Then
did a typical install. Installed SR-1, installed DRAW,
installed SR-2b and finally, installed the SR-2 value
pack. And it really worked!

Glad it worked. I did forget to mention that you had to manually remove the
remains of the Office directory after it was uninstalled or the new install
would fail.
