_derived folder

Susan

I have Windows XP Pro with IIS installed. I create my simple website and use
the buttons and then ftp it out to the remote location. I had to abort an
FTP in progress and now a couple of buttons do not show on the Home page but
the others do-- get the red X. The text shows up fine.

I thought if I could ftp the themes folder which contains the gifs, it would
correct the problem but it did not. I noticed that the _overlay folder
contains the text for the buttons. It must be the _derived folder that
contains the button gifs. I noticed that it contains the buttons with the
text and the missing buttons with the text. It is the _derived folder that
is the key?

So FP 2003 creates the _derived folder on servers without FP extensions
since I do not see it on servers with FP externsions?

The _derived folder is a hidden folder. When using Themes and publishing to a non FP enabled web
server, it must also be uploaded.

So is the _derived folder always present on every FP website whether it has
FP extensions or not? I did not see it on remote sites on servers with FP
extensions. Where is it hidden?

T

Thomas A. Rowe

Yes, it is always a hidden folder, if theme are used. FP hides all folder beginning with a
underscore character by default with the exception of the _private folder. You can enable the
viewing of most hidden folders in FP by opening the site, then Tools | web / Site settings |
Advanced and enable viewing of hidden directories.

The folders are hidden because they shouldn't be modified by users. When ever possible try to use FP
to publish, even to server that do not have the FP extensions, in which case you would use ftp://
instead of http:// this way FP will upload on the files and folders actually needed.

Months ago, I have enabled seeing the hidden folders(_private, _borders,
_fpclass, _overlay,_theme) but I cannot find the _derived folder on the
local website. Does the _derived folder get created somehow when files are
ftp'd to remote server without FP extensions?

T

Thomas A. Rowe

No. The _derived, _theme, _overlay, folders are only created when you apply a theme or use FP
navigation components. The _border folder is created when ever you use shared borders. These folder
are on created on a server with the FP extensions or in a disk-based web.

The _derived folders (there may be more than one, depending on the folder
structure of the web site) have a special status within FrontPage - they are
*always* hidden within FrontPage.
The _derived folder is created whenever you use a theme to display a navbar
graphically, and has nothing to do with FTP. It is kept hidden because the
folder is also used to store other files (unrelated to the theme or
navigation) that users should never attempt to edit.

Okay, my _derived folder is messed up on my remote site without FP
extensions. I want to fix it. But if I cannot find the _derived folder on my
local site, guess I cannot fix it by ftping it from the local to the remote.
FP hid it well from me!

Thanks for any suggestions!

Run Tools | Recalculate Hyperlinks or re-apply the theme or change your navigation structure so that
it is recreated.

I have not figured this _derived folder thing out. I could not find the
_derived folder in my local website on the IIS server. I have use
recalulate! I published it to my local machine in the Documents- no FP
extensions but buttons work. I could not find the _derived folder in the web
in the Documents folder. I tried to ftp from the local website in Document
folder to remote. AOL kicked me off so it did not complete the ftp. I sign
back on AOL and open up FP again and I see the _derived folder in the
Document folder. I selectively publish the _derived folder to the remote
website and everything is fine!

That _derived folder is elusive! Sometimes I see it and then I don't!

Not all hidden folders can be seen while in the FP client application, even when you have enabled
viewing of hidden directories, however you should be able to see all folders via Windows Explorer or
My Computer.

.

If you don't have the server extensions you don't need the folders like
_vti_vtx or _derived etc. Also if your server does have the server extensions,
you shouldn't be FTP'ing your files - use the http mode in Frontpage itself.

Yes, when you create a new folder in Windows Explorer, then you go to Frontpage,
then file > open web and select the folder you created, it will say "Frontpage
needs to add special files folders to function correctly....:" so it sets them
up, probably assuming you eventually will publish to a extension-enabled server.

Whether you do or not is your choice.

No, I don't ftp to servers with FP extensions. I do not want to mess
anything up! I am non-paid volunteer who tries to maintain a few local
non-profit websites and try to do it as cheaply as possible using remote
hosting without FP extensions. I found out that I could get away using the
navigation, buttons, themes on my Windows XP Pro with IIS installed. My
problem has been that I am dial-up and have to "selectively publish" because
my ISP disconnects me after too much time. I needed to ftp the _derived
folder. Selective Publishing does not get the _derived folder out there when
you cannot see it within FP to ftp it!

Now I am wondering in this case if I can select "Don't Publish" on most
folders and try the ftp and get the unseen _derived folder to be ftp'd.

Susan,

Depending on the type of navigation component, the FP extensions may be required on the remote
server to function.

I understand but so far I have not encountered a problem. I look forward to
this as a learning experience. I appreciate all the help that you and
others have given me.
