_vti_cnf being made in non FP Web folders off Root!

O

odie

Okay,on my hosting site when my Web author uploads our web
page all these _vti folders are created in *every*
directory off my root. I understand that the underscore
directories off my root can not be touch, nor the
underscore files in the directory where are web pages are.

However, I have a number of other non-Front Page web
directories (phpBB, file hosting, user uploading) that get
these _vti directories with matching files in them. I
delete them but as soon as my web author uploads they come
back.

Is there a way to stop this? It is driving me NUTs and is
eating space! If you know of any setting please email me
at odie3ATghostdogs.net (remove the AT and replace it with
@).

FP will maintain _vti folders for all content within a web. This is controlled by the server
extensions on the server when you publish via FP.

To avoid these in folders where the content is NOT maintained by FP, convert the folder to subwebs,
then use a FTP application to upload/maintain the content within the subwebs, do no open the subweb
in FP or run a check on the extensions, that includes the subwebs.

The files in the _vti folder really do not take up that much space at 1 -2 kb each.

If it's opened / edited in FrontPage there are going to be _vti_cnf folders.
They *do not* contain duplicate files, they are what FrontPage uses to maintain it's inventory and
what it uses to manage your site.

Do not delete them.
Rule of thumb, if you're using FrontPage and you did not either create or import a file that you see
in your web, leave it alone.

That's why these files are hidden when you open the web in FrontPage.

Thank you for your responce Mr. Rowe

What do you mean by subweb? Is that an option in FP or at
my hosting site?

Sorry, I am sure that is a dumb question...

It is a function of FP and the FP extensions, however a host has the ability to not allow users to
use or create subweb under their hosting account.
