_vti_cnf folders

I have just taken over a site that is not a frontpage site and is hosted on a
server without fp extensions...I was able to download the site through the
ftp feature in remote site properties...I noticed when publishing a new page
through ftp that FP wanted to remove the _vti_cnf folder on the remote
site....I said no and everything seem to work fine...I read somewhere that FP
will not download these type of folders so that is why I did not get it when
publishing from remote to local. I opened the folder on the remote site and
their are files in there....What is the best way to proceed? Can i just
ignore that folder and the files in it? Will I ever have to access those
files???? If I change current pages will I need access to those...Thank you

FrontPage will never publish the _vti_* folders: in sites that have
extensions the folders are created and maintained by the extensions
during the Publish and editing processes. They are used for site
management in your local web, and for site management and
synchronisation in FrontPage extended web sites. The folders are not
required, and are not used, in server based sites that are not FrontPage
extended.
As Steve said - ignore them, but do not remove them from your local
site.
