Initially we had “dotproject†as a proposed solution for our reporting. But
the reason my organization decided to go for MS Project Server was its
integration with MS Project and MS Sharepoint Services. And our main goal was
to customize PWA time sheets such that it replaces the current time sheet
mechanism being used, i.e. customized excel sheets. In excel, a weekly
timesheet is sent by the Team Member to the respective Team Lead of each
team. A TM (Team Member) can see a standard set of tasks in the drop down
menu and can select the appropriate one. Then against that task, he describes
the activities performed in carrying out the task. This is in descriptive
form. (eg: I select “Development†as the task from drop down and then in
description I write: “Coding of Module A and Module B and Database workâ€).
The advantage we’re having with this mechanism is that we can track actual
work done against each task as well as if it is directly billable to client
or to my organization. Like, if a resource performs the task of “Self Studyâ€
for 2 hours to be able to perform “Development†Task in 4 hours, then client
will be billable for 4 hours and my organization for the 2 hours.
So what I did is that I created a project named Time Sheet with custom
outline codes for selection of Activity under a task, input of its
description and billability etc as drop downs. There were 15 Tasks in the
project and I assigned each task to all the resources. But when I tried
filling up my time sheet for week 1 (with all the custom fields filled) and
sent it to the PM for approval, after approval, time sheet of all the
employees was updated with the same description etc as I entered.
Then in another case, If I input my activities for Task 1 in Week 1, and
then in Week 2, I perform different activities for the same Task 1, this
would over write the data for Week 1.
Apparently what we’re trying to achieve isn’t possible with MS Project. And
the final decision would go for DotProject. But still if, in your opinion,
what I’m trying to achieve is possible using MS Project Server (Even if any
kind of programmatic activity is required for this). If there can be another
approach towards achieving the same goal and you can suggest, I would be
grateful.
I look forward to hearing from you.
