Hi,

I get so much value from this newsgroup that occasionally I'd like to
give something back.

I learned to default my date starting with the entire four numbers of
the year at the start of the date using this format: 2007-01-31. As
each year goes by, the folders or files to which I have assigned a
date are catalogued in chronological order. As far as I can see, none
of the other available formats do this.

Once I caught on to this, my organization improved.

In the finder the dates go from recent at the bottom to older at the
top. I'd like to know how to put current at the top, older at the
bottom.

Best,

Rafael

I understand you to mean that you are actually naming *folders* in the
manner 2007-01-31. If so, click the Name caption above the folder names to
sort the list in the opposite order.

You can do it in finder list view. (cmd-2)
Chose to sort on name, then click the little triangle.
There might be a geeky way to change the finder's default sort order
for column view, but I wouldn't know where to look. I'd guess it might
be in a plist somewhere, but it is a bit scary changing that stuff.

PS. I had a lot of fun sorting out a macro to do the date time like you
asked. I'd been meaning to do one of those for myself.

Actually, I have one of those extra special hi-tech 007 spy thingies that
intercepts your posts & allows me the time to preempt them prior to
releasing yours to the group - it even re-words things a little in order to
avert any appearance of plagiarism...

I think they call it the "iPhoneXtra" ;0)

Hi Rafael:

Well done!

You are recommending a technique that has been used in European and Japanese
corporate practice since the days of DOS, but is not so well known in other
countries.

The format you are using is the International Standards Organisation date
format. It will work even better if you leave the hyphens out (some file
systems do not like hyphens in file names).

The ISO format also enables you to append a time to the end of the date,
using the 24-hour format. Don't go overboard: in some file systems only the
first 30 characters of the file name are considered in the sorting :)

Cheers

Thanks,

I find no "Name" above column view which is the format I use. I found
"Name" in List View and could change the chronology as you said.
However, when reverting to column view the change didn't register and
the order remained old at the top, new at the bottom. Can I have
chronology choice in column.

Rafael

PS I'm reminded here that I'm using my regular email address. I have
a munged address but I forgot how to have it show up here at
newsgroups.

Hi Rafael:

If you're using Entourage, you need to create a different "Account" for
newsgroup posting. Tools>Accounts>...

Since remembering to USE it for each post is an utter pain in the "A", you
either have to make a rule running an AppleScript to switch accounts, or use
a different client for newsgroups.

Personally, I allow my real email address to show and let the server's Spam
Filter worry about what happens next. It could be rejecting thousands of
spam/viruses/attachments/idiots trying to get me to do free work -- I
wouldn't know, I never see them :)

Cheers

AFAIK, no. Each of the three viewing modes has its own set of parameters
with default settings. The view offering sort versatility is List, but you
can set Icon view to "Arrange by" Creation Date, Name, Modification Date,
etc. That view, however doesn't allow sorting, so Ascending is all you get.
