A customized Entourage install

I presently have Office for the Mac 2004 installed except for
Entourage.
It seems that in order to use the Envelope Addressing tool in Word I
must have all the addresses in the Entourage address file. Can I
safely custom install Entourage at this time without screwing up the
other applications in Office.

Thanks......Arnie

Hello Arnie,

Office is designed to be an integrated suite, as you have found out. With
the caveat that someone more specialized may come along and contradict me,
my strong inclination would be to use the Remove Office tool that came on
your installation CD and re-install all of Office so that all the linkages
between the components are as in a default installation. But don't do it yet
-- wait a day or two for other people's comments.

This one's clearly out of my area of expertise but is the Entourage
address book the only thing the Envelope Addressing tool in Word can
use? How about an Excel file or plain text file?

Depends on what one means by "Envelope Addressing" tool--one can
certainly set up a data merge from an Excel file to handle lots of
addresses. For quick one-offs, though, Tools | Envelope has a little
"contacts" icon--the Contacts toolbar lets you select a name and add the
address/phone information, etc--and those things will only call on the
Office Address Book, which is stored in Entourage.

Firstly, I want to thank the folks who replied to my question.....you
guys are great.

If I could find a way to import addresses from Word 5.1 to Entourage
I'd have it made. 5.1 had a great envelope function which sad to say,
has been "improved" with subsequent versions.

Entourage has an Import feature. You can import tab delimited files, you can
drag in contacts, you can import an Entourage archive file. It also will
import from other Identities. You can import your PC files too.

Just out of curiosity, can you say more about what made the envelope
function great and where Word 2004 is lacking? That type of feedback is
always helpful to pass along.

I have not found a way to import the address file from Word 5.1.

The reasons I feel so partial to the envelope function in Word 5.1 is
it's shear simplicity. All the data is an integeral part of the
application. Where as all the contact info in Office is located in
Entourage. The whole contact process is very clunky.

If Word 5.1 would let you export the addresses as a tab-delimited file
or somesuch, you could import that into Entourage. I have no idea what
Word 5.1 allows. Even if you could copy and paste all the addressees
into a Word file, probably we could help you get that importable, though
at that point, depending on how many addresses, it might be easier just
to enter them manually.

If you use Entourage and Word together, it's pretty simple and very
good, and integrated such that the contacts in Entourage are directly
accessible from Word without even launching Entourage.

But in general, software has gotten more complicated in the last 10-15
years or so since Word 5.1 was written.
