A data file did not close properly ...

Hello,

I'm running Vista 64-bit, Outlook 2007, and have an iPhone 3G. Outlook
worked perfectly until my first sync with the iPhone (via iTunes 7.7). Ever
since then I get the following error message ...

"A data file did not close properly the last time it was used and is being
checked for problems. Performance might be affected while the check is in
progress."

I've since tried disabling the iTunes add-in in Outlook (no success).
Uninstalling iTunes altogether (no success). And running scanpst.exe on my
..pst file (no success).

Any tips on how I should move forward to resolve the problem with be
greatly, greatly appreciated.

The error normally occurs when outlook doesn't close properly because
another process has it open. Leaving a PDA connected when you close outlook
will do it. Outlook calls up scanpst to check the pst when it loads.

In most cases, its more annoying than damaging. look in tasks manager to see
if its running after you close it. If so, start outlook in safe mode and
see if it exits correctly. if so, another add-in is doing it.

Thank you for the quick reply.

I understand that leaving a PDA or phone connected when closing Outlook will
cause Outlook not to close properly. However, I'm still having the problem
after uninstalling iTunes and haven't connected my phone to the computer in
over a week.

I'm 99.99% sure the problem is related to iTunes 7.7 as the problem didn't
occur until right after the program was install and my phone synced. (I'm
also not the only person reporting the problem.)

I'll try running Outlook in safe mode as you suggested and will report back.

When I close Outlook, OUTLOOK.exe is not running in task manager. Does that
mean that Outlook closed properly or not?

So if it's closing properly, what does that mean for my .pst file? I've
already successfully run SCANPST.exe on it and the error still comes back.

Should I try uninstalling and reinstalling Outlook?

Oh, I wanted to ask if you thought a system restore would be wise? Should I
roll back my computer to before the first sync with the iPhone (and before I
installed iTunes)? That would be about 1.5 weeks.

If you have the restore point, it certainly won't hurt. It has a better
chance that uninstalling - uninstalling rarely fixes anything the detect and
repair (office diagnostics) can't fix.

so - if you close outlook and run scanpst before opening it again, outlook
still does the repair?

I am getting the same problem (Vista 64), since I installed iTunes
7.7.1.11. Didn't want to install it, but had to to use an iPhone

I removed it, closed Outlook, killed pending processes, restarted Outlook, received the corrupt file message for the last time and waited for the file to be fixed.
I closed Outlook and since then no more messages.

In my case it was caused by the iTunes plugin.
I removed it, closed Outlook, killed pending processes, restarted Outlook,
received the corrupt file message for the last time and waited for the
file to be fixed.
I closed Outlook and since then no more messages.
