I recently installed Windows 2000 from 98 and re installed Office 97
on my machine. Since running 2000 when ever I open a previously
created excel document I get the message " a document with the name
(file name) is already open. You cannot open two documents with the
same name etc etc." Of course I only have one document of that name
on my system I also get a similar message when opening word. Any
ideas on how to get rid of this message.
thanks

How are you opening the files? If you are opening the files outside
the application (other than using File/Open) then it sounds like the
File Associations need to be recreated.

Go to Start/Run and run the following:

winword /r
excel /regserver
powerpnt /regserver
msaccess /regserver

Note that there is a space before the forward slash.

The commands I provided will recreate the file associations for the
Office applications.

When you open a file outside the application (other than using
File/Open) your OS looks at the file extension for the file. Your OS
then looks to your Registered File Types (file associations) and
matches the file extension. The Registered File Type stores
information such as which application to open the file with along with
the instructions on how to open the file.

If there is an error in the Registered File Type, such as the filename
is represented twice ("%1"), then your OS will try to open the file
twice per the instructions.
