a floating trigger

I want to start development on a relatively certain date, but can’t until
funding and resources are acquired. These do not depend on anything else in
the plan, they just come when they come. Also, development will not start
the moment those are acquired, as a lot of other things must happen before
then. How can I make the development line have resources and funding as
predecessors, but keep that line planned for a 10/21 start?

I looked at other questions on this list but couldn't quite apply that
learning to this question - although I think the answer will be similar!

thanks.

Hi,

Enter a milestone "development start, give it a Must Start On Constraint on
10/21
nter all necessary tasks (resorucing, funding).. with expected durations,
and link them to the start milestone.

Hope this helps

But what if it's not a "must start" constraint, but a soon as...the funding
goes through, the resources are acquired, and everything else is in place?

Naomi,

You might try making development the predecessor of both funding and
resource with a Start-to-Finish dependency. This will allow development to
continue to move with the rest of the schedule and will show when funding and
resources must start and finish by.

It will not lock development to start 10/21 but it will tell you when
funding and resources must be finished by and allow the other predecessors of
development to drive its start date. Otherwise you must use a harder
constraint as suggested by Jan.

Darrell,
just to be clear,
development cannot start until either funding or resources are in place. I
wasn't sure from your response if you meant that it could go ahead without
them. They can come at any time, however, making development a moving target.
