A Message that Won't Go Away

Dan

Hi All,

For the past few days I been getting the following
message every time I use Word or Outlook:

The file Normal already exists. Do you want to replace
the existing file?

It doesn't seem to matter whether I say Yes, No or
Cancel. Does anyone know what's going on and how I can
eliminate this bothersome message?

Thanks,
Dan

Hi Dan,

This could be caused by several things but the first item to rule out
these days is Norton's "Office Plug-in" option. If you have Norton AV
then you'll find the Office Plug-in option in Norton Options under the
Miscellaneous section.

If that isn't it then more than likely you have a global
template/add-in that modifies your Normal.dot each time Word starts.
Using such an add-in is not recommended since the modifications can
lead to file bloat which ultimately leads to the corruption of your
Normal.dot.

To determine if you are using any global templates go to
Tools/Templates and Add-Ins and see if there are any global templates
or add-ins listed. If so they are located in one of your Startup
folders.

The Office\Startup folder can be found in the Office installation
path..

The location of your Word Startup folder can be found by going to
Tools/Options/File Locations

Exit Word and locate the Startup folder(s). If more multiple files
move them one at a time and try starting Word after each file is moved
out of the folder until you determine which one is causing the
problem.

Please post all follow-up questions to the newsgroup. Requests for
assistance by email can not be acknowledged.
