A newsgroup for Office 2004?

S

Stephen Fox

Since so many messages now have to do with Office 2004, I wonder if
there ought to be a different group for those still using Office X
(includes moi) and the new version. Just a thought....

And should questions about Entourage and other components of X and 2004
be discussed in a group other than one dedicated to Word?

:))) The same thing happens every time a new version comes out - yet
people still answer posts about Office 4.2.1.
I understand it could be a bit annoying to have to read through posts
after posts about a version you don;t use to find useful information
about Office X though ;-\

While it's certainly annoying to see posts for versions you're not
using, from my experience, establishing a version specific group would
not be worthwhile, for two reasons:

1) As you allude to below, getting people to post in application/version
specific groups is difficult at best, and

2) Many questions are not version specific, or involve multiple versions.
And should questions about Entourage and other components of X and 2004

Only if they apply to Word.

Hi Stephen,

A couple of years ago there used to be separate newsgroups for the different
versions of Word. It was too unwieldy for the relatively small group of
MacWord users out there, so they were combined into one. And considering
those relatively small numbers, it's a lot easier for those of us who answer
questions on a regular basis to deal with one newsgroup for Word, rather
than 5 or 6.

However ... if you and everyone else in the Mac universe would convince all
your Windows friends to switch :), we would be happy to see more groups
created to deal with all the new traffic!

And, yes, there are separate newsgroups for Entourage
(microsoft.public.mac.office.entourage) and the other Office apps, but
sometimes questions touch on more than one app and people aren't sure which
newsgroup to post to.

Had to read this a couple of times before I figured out what you were
referring to...

an excellent case for snipping, especially when bottom posting.

Personally, I would rather not. I cover 15 versions of Word on nine
operating systems. It does me a big favour if the posts are all in just two
groups: PC and Mac.

And I can tell you that many posters can't even get that right :) Not to
mention the Unix people, who tend to end up in there when they should be
here, and the OS 2 people, who tend to end up someplace else altogether :)

If you are talking about intra-application issues, they should be going into
the MacOffice group. But in Mac, the same people tend to cover multiple
groups and we all know each other (sometimes we are even speaking to each
other...) so we can share stuff around as needed.

My vote is please no more groups! I am personally running out of eyeball
and brain bandwidth :)

Cheers
