A problem with building OLAP cube -

R

RSlusser

On 6/17 Nam posted the following:

----------------------------------------------------------
I've been trying to build an OLAP cube but the Admin's PWA
indicates
that the status of the building never passes the
initialization phase, with
the following message unchanged for hours, if not for days:

"The cube building process was initiated on 6/16/2004 at
4:41 PM"

We're using Project Server 2003 with all the major
components (DB,
WSS,etc...)
are in one box (Windows Server 2003), except for the AD
and SMTP servers
which are in different hosts. Much appreciated if you
could give a hint as
to why
the OLAP cube building doesn't get passed the
initialization phase. Thanks.

I have not seen a response to Nam's posting so will try to
shake the bushes...

I am experiencing exactly the same issue with an OLAP cube
that had been working 6+ months (same system configuration
as above). In our case, the sudden failure seems to
coincide with running out of space for the transaction log
on the DB Server. We have resolved the space issue for
the transaction log and everything is now working again
with the exception of our ablility to rebuild the OLAP
cube.

Any hints on how to get this working again would be
greatly appreciated.

I lIke to see an answer of this question as well, because I have the same
problem. I can initiate a cube, all this works after applying the latest
analysis patches on the SQL- server (on a different machine than the
project server), as well as on the machine giving the project server.
This must be somehow a communication problem between the servers, which
is not detected! The project server let me think everything is fine, what
is not. When trying to establish a new view with the portfolio analyzer,
no cube is available, what is true, after a closer look on the SQL-server

Any hint very much appreciated!

Nam:

There are many possibilities, here are a couple of the most likely:

1) SQL Server and Analysis Services must both have the same service pack
level - these are separate installs
2) The COM+ identity for OLAP must be a member of the OLAP administrators
group on the server
3) The COM+ identity must be established using the COM+ tool

The most important thing is to look at the application event log on Project
Server and let us know what type of errors you're seeing.

Henry:

If you've got two servers, one running SQL and one running Project Server,
then you must apply the service pack three (3) times.

1) SQL Server
2) Analysis Services
3) Project Server

Did you do this?

For my best knowledge yes. I am in the game as a consulter and I did this
on the Project Server (i.e. installing Analysis Services and applying the
latest patch), and ensured that the latest service pack was applied on
the Analysis Services (on the SQL Server) too. After this set-up I was
able to create a new cube over the project center without any error (but
it was not built on the SQL Server). The other guy resp. for the SQL
Server environment said, he did applied the patch on the SQL Server. I
will x-check this on Friday, but I think he is right, because he said he
built a disk and applied the latest patches. (But he didn't knew that the
service pack for the Analysis Services does not come automagically, even
if you have everything on the same disk, so *I *applied the latest
Analysis Services patch on the SQL Server). In case everything is set,
anything else you can imagine?

The COM+ were set-up before but run again the other guy migrated the SQL
Server on a different machine. Must I run COM+ (for the OLAP cube) again
after applying the patches?

How can I ensure that on the SQL Server everything is set up correct
(with a simple test)?

Do you see errors in the application event log? If the cube build fails, we
should see an error there.

Thanks for the suggestions.

In our case, there were no entries (errors, or otherwise)
in the application event log on the Project Server. Also,
Portfolio Analyzer could still connect to the last
successful build of the OLAP cube.

However, the good news is that we finally got this working
again today by just re-running the PSComPlus utility!

Henry:

You may not see an error in the PWA interface, however it should show up in
the server event log.

Thanks Gary,

I have to x-check on Friday, but I assume no event, -otherwise the build
on demand of the cube should complain with an error??

You was quite right Gary!

I discovered 8(!) Errors on Project Server side in the Event Viewer, and
the application let me think everything behaved well, telling the cube
was built and everything si fine...

So coming to the first problem, which is probably the solution if solved.
The log goes like this:

------------------- log starts -------------------------
25.06.2004 14:44:02 Microsoft Project Server Tracing Eventlog Provider
Fehler Keine 2 NT-AUTORIT’T\LOKALER DIENST AFG-PROJECT "File:
C:\Office\dev\project\WebClient\source\utility\pjadorsutil2.cpp
Line: 1691
Error Number: 0x80004005
Description:
Assert Detected. The error code was
also included.

___________________________________

Description:
Cannot find file
'<PC11DSN>\resglobal'

------------------- log ends -------------------------

Is this telling me that the PC11DSN is missing? I installed the Analysis
Services on the Project Server (but did it completely, not as mentioned
the DSO part only), so why? What went wrong. Any hint is much
appreciated. I had no sufficient time Yesterday to go any further with
the probably missing PC11DSN, but what must I do, to x-check if the
installation of Analysis Services ran successfully.
