A problem with bullet points

M

Mick

I'm running Windows 2003 server with terminal services and have Office
2003 running as well.

The problem is that every time some one clicks the bulleting button in
the toolbars or selecting it from the menu causes it to crash, spitting
out an error associated with winword.exe and mso.dll

Now i've tried everything from commandline switches and deleting
registry keys to changeing addins and .dot files. I also tried help >
detect and repair.

I'm trying a uninstall then a registry cleanup then a fresh install
tonight, this is a last resort.

Nothing is working. I send the error reports to Microsoft and there is
no response.

If any one has any suggestions, no matter what they are, please tell me
because this isn't good for the people who use it.

Don't use the bullet button (or the numbering button). You are just making
headaches for yourself if you do.

See: How to create numbered headings or outline numbering in your Word
document
http://www.shaunakelly.com/word/numbering/OutlineNumbering.html. (For
bullets see http://www.shaunakelly.com/word/bullets/controlbullets.html, the
subject is related.)

Have you tried deleting
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\11.0\Word\List Gallery Presets?

If there were a problem with anything other than bullets, I'd suggest
looking at the printer driver, which can affect bullets and numbers but
would also show up in problems with Page Setup, Symbol, Style, Font,
Paragraph, and other print-related dialogs.

Ok, its not the issue of wether i use the button or not, its the fact
that i have 20+ users at the moment running terminal session's and one
of them by mistake presses the button and its a big headache for them.
I'm not tring to sound mean or anything its just i don't want a work
arround i want a solution to the problem. I know i may have asked for
any form of help but i mean't in the form of actually fixing it, not
living with it.

I tried deleting the list gallery presets key but that didn't help.
Another point on that is that it happens to most people but not all,
some profiles are fine for some reason, thats why i'm in a bit of a
pickle.

I'll try looking at the print drivers and see what i can discern from
it

I'm sorry, it isn't fixable short of setting up your bullets using styles as
shown. Your users can (1) stop using bullets, (2) switch word processors
which might or might not help, (3) learn to use bullets based on styles. You
can help them do the latter by setting up some templates which have these
styles. You could remove the bullet button from those template. You could
put in your own button that picks one of your styles. You could put in a
menu of style choices.

I wish I could tell you that Santa Claus will be here next Christmas; I can
say that the next version of Word might fix this problem. Optimism spring
eternal. That has been the hope of many for a long time, but the problem
seems to be central to Word's coding. It is my understanding that the next
version is a major rewrite, though. (The above is based on rumors, not
knowledge or experience. They are good rumors, though.)

You can simplify the documents and how bullets are used so they won't
corrupt, but, in my opinion, that is even harder to force on users. When
they start editing them or moving them from computer to computer, problems
will pop up.

Hi Mick,

The fact that the error occurs when you try to use Bullets, on the
toolbar or menu, and the error is associated with MSO.dll then this
does indicate corruption in the List Gallery Presets key in the
Registry. Since you do have 20+ users are you sure you successfully
recreated the key?

Note there can be no occurrences of Winword.exe running for the key to
be successfully recreated with new values and not recreated with the
old values. If you are also using Word as the email editor in Outlook
then Word is still running. Try recreating the key again but check the
Task Manager first.

Please post all follow-up questions to the newsgroup. Requests for
assistance by email can not be acknowledged.
