A problem with creating table of centent using heading styles

Leonard

I'm writing a thesis with Word 2007 and inserted a table of content using the
built-in heading styles. I want the title of each chapter take on a TeX
style, i.e..

Chapter 1
Introduction
....
Chapter 2
A Mathematical Model

After I applied the heading 1 style to the text of chapter titles and insert
a table of content (TOC), my TOC looks like this

Chapter 1...................................5
Introduction ...............................5
Chapter 2...................................6
A Mathematical Model .................6

But what I need is this

1 Introduction .............................5
2.A Mathematical Model ...............6

How can I do this? Thanks.

Suzanne, thanks for the reply.

But I fail to follow the content of the link you provided. Are there any
step-by-step intructions to solve my problem?

I thought the instructions there were pretty step-by-step. You use two
separate paragraphs and two separate styles (one numbered). You're already
doing that. You pick up *only* the unnumbered style for the TOC (omitting
the numbered one) and add the numbering to the TOC style.

How to add the numbering to the TOC style?

The same way you add it to any other style. I can't tell you specifically
for Word 2007 (which is a little different from 2003), but I'm sure someone
can.

I can right-click the TOC area in Word and choose 'numbering > define
numbering format' to do that. Now another problem: When I click table of
contents in the Reference tab, the preview of TOC looks like:

1. Heading 1
Heading 2
Heading 3

That is, there is a "1." to the left of Heading 1.

When I open another Word document, the preview of TOC is this:
Heading 1
Heading 2
Heading 3

How can I remove the "1."?

In order for the numbering to be appropriately added to the TOC 1 style, do
this: Press Ctrl+Alt+Shift+S to show the Styles pane. Click the Manage
Styles button. Locate TOC 1. Click Modify, Format, Numbering.

When you're creating the TOC, the number 1 will be shown in the previews, as
you've noticed. This is because the preview shows the formatting of the TOC
entries, and numbering is now part of the top-level TOC entries.
