A STRANGE THING HAPPENED - EXCEL NUMBER OF ZEROES

Have just installed office 2004 for mac. everything worked fine until I
tried my new excel. It is so strange and impossible to understand. When
writing a number to any cell in a sheet excel automatically devides the
number with 100. When writing 100 and push the enter button the number
1 shows up in the cell. On the formula bar, before pushing the enter
button, the correct number is shown, but as mentioned the number I want
to write comes out as 1/100 of what I put in to the cell. I have tried
to use the format cell function to see if there is something wrong with
the format of the cell, but everthing is as it should be.

When opening files created on other machines or in my old excel version
are the figures in the sheet correct, but as soon as I try to work
within the document the same thing happens with new information I put
in. any suggestions?

Not so strange at all. Go to Excel-preferences, click on edit and then
uncheck the fixed decimal places choice.

thanks a lot. I feel I bit tupid when the solution is so obvious. but
can you tell me what this function is good for?

Sure, the function mimics certain calculators so that you do not have to key
all the decimal digits for money amounts.
