a weird problem, changing format affects the whole document

word 2003, change
when I change the format of just part of a document, the whole document
change to the new format

for example one sentence or one paragraph,
ctrl+B to make it bold, or ctrl+E make it centre-alignment. or bullets
a paragraph, the whole document change to that format.

I open the styles and formatting window, seems when I change the
format, it change the format of "normal" style, and certainly all
styles are based on the normal style, so the whole document change to
the new format

so weird, any solution?

thanks

In the styles window, uncheck the checkbox to 'automatically update' - this
means that any changes made to text of that style in the document become
changes to the style definition - definitely just what you don't want when
you make changes to 'normal' text and so many other styles are based on
'normal'!

That check-box should come with a Mental Health Warning.
