Outlook 2002 - Abbreviations such as Mr. and vs. have a compatibility issue
with the spelling engine. It parses the period off the word (thinking it's
the end of the sentence) and tries to match Mr to the dictionary.
Unfortunately the dictionary has Mr. in it, not Mr and so it offers to
replace Mr with Mr. - which gives you Mr.. in the message.
Also, Word 2002 has figured out this trick - it understands - it knows...
