This suggestion applies to all charts in Excel and PivotCharts in Access.
In manufacturing, we are constantly measuring various goals, sampling data,
etc.. Because our audience is so diverse, we need common, quick, visual
methods to communicate the many various metrics in a manufacturing plant. One
method is to chart the trends of metrics, e.g., productivity, defects,
customer satisfaction, on-time delivery and show a goal on the chart.
Typically, I use the standard drawing menu to draw a line across the chart
to show a goal of say, 90%. This is fine, but if the goal changes, then I
have to move the line and it may not print correctly, causing more
manipulation of the drawing objects. In summary, it's very annoying and
tedious.
Another way to communicate progress towards a goal is to use a stop light
method. We like to use this because it is extremely visual, and a viewer only
has to glance at the chart to know how we are performing. Example, +90% is
green (good), 70-90% is yellow (marginal), below 70% is red (bad). This is
done on a chart by again, using the drawing toolbar to set semi-transparent
rectangles on the chart and manually adjusting them so they don't annoyingly
print with gaps between the control ranges(rectangles). The end product is
extremely effective in communicating performance, but again, but patience is
required in getting there.
I would like to see a formatting menu for the chart background that allows
individual ranges to be defined and formatted, kind of like conditional
formatting of cells. Also, it would be extremely convenient to be able to
pick individual properties of axis lines and format those to stick out from
the crowd.
Please vote for this suggestion, I think this would be a great enhancement
for the Office product line!!!!
