able to open word but not visible on screen

When I try to open word in Office 97 it shows that it is
open on the bottom of the screen but does not actually
open on the screen. I installed a Norton Virus system and
then re-installed Office 97 but there is still no change.

As you surmise, it's opening offscreen. These steps will usually bring it
back:

1. Open any other window.

2. Right-click on an empty area of the Taskbar and choose Cascade. This
should bring the Word window back in view.

3. Use the mouse to move and size the window to your preference (and to
"set" its new position), then quit Word.

4. When you restart Word, the window should be where you left it.
