About merging cells vs. resizing columns and rows

Diane Dennis

Hi All!

I'm on OS 10.1.5 using Excel X for Mac Service Release 1

When creating forms and I need a larger cell, is there a difference
between merging cells and resizing columns/rows as far as
functionality of the form is concerned?

I know that resizing the height of a row and the width of a column
resizes the entire row/column, I'm just wondering if one or the other
(merge or resize) will further enhance (or hinder) the operation of
the document and the size of the file.

Thank you very much for any help!

For the design of a form on a worksheet, I normally recommend the use of merged cells

Normally, merged cells are easier to manage than resizing cells, when the content of a cell is longer than the dimension of a cell can accommodate

Secondly, if cells are not merged and the content of a cell is too long an extends beyond the cell, the printout may look different from the screen

There is no rule-of-thumb for this topic. It depends on your own preference and habit

I almost never use Merge cells since doing so makes it difficult to
select rows or columns for formatting, to do sorts, and a few other
inconveniences. If your form is going to be static and only have the
user input data, Merge cells might help make your form more
aesthetically pleasing.
