Absolute page numbering in a doc with multiple sections

G

Graham

The doc is about 16 pages long, split into 5 sections; A,
B, C, D and E. The footers for each page should show the
page number for each section such as:page 1, 2, 3 of 3 for
Section A, Page 1, 2, 3, 4 of 4 for Section B and so on.
But elsewhere on each page, the user wants the absolute
page number, regardless of which section we're in. I'm
battling.

To do this, you will need to select each of the section breaks and assign a
bookmark to them - using names such as Section1, Section2 will make it easy
to follow.

For where you want the page number to be the absolute page number, just use
the { PAGE } field, and for Section 1 of the document, you can do that as
well.

In Section 2 of the document, you will need to use the following field
construction

{ = { PAGE } - { PAGEREF Section1 } }

In Section 3 it will be

{ = { PAGE } - { PAGEREF Section2 } }

and so on.

In the header or footer whereever the numbers are to appear, you will need
to have the "Same as previous" unchecked. Also, to create the field
constructions, you must use Ctrl+F9 to insert each pair of field delimiters
{ }. You use Alt+F9 to toggle off the field codes and F9 (or print preview)
to get the fields to update and show the result of the calculation.

Doug, you don't spell out the fact that you'd need another PAGEREF field for
the Y part of the Page X of Y format. Since it's easy enough to get the Page
X of Y using "Page { PAGE } of { SECTIONPAGES }" (restarting numbering in
each section), I think it would be easier to add the PAGEREF field to the
PAGE field to get the "absolute" page number. This would be true, however,
only if the TOC didn't require the absolute page number.
