Accented "s"

I am trying to make an accent on the word Nose over the "s." I can make
other
characters (o, e, u, etc. )using the option E, then the letter function, but
an "s" won't work.
I am on a Mac OSX system with Word 2000. Any ideas?

See http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/General/InsertSpecChars.htm and
http://sbarnhill.mvps.org/WordFAQs/Overbar.htm. You don't say what type of
accent you're trying to put over the s. If it's an acute or circumflex
accent or a caron, you can find the accented characters at U015B, 015D, and
0161 in the Latin Extended-A character subset of "(normal text)" in the
Symbol dialog. The Latin Extended Additional subset in Arial Unicode MS
offer further accented characters.

I believe that Mac has a slightly different system that may make it more
difficult to insert these characters. In recent Windows versions, you can
just type the code (015B, for example), then press Alt+X.

Do you know where can I go to get these subsets for a Mac. I don't have them
in my symbol table. I am trying to use the french accent, I believe it is the
caron, but not positive. Thank you for your answer, but I'm afraid I still
can't make the character.

Bob: Wow, that was so cool! After four hours of trying to find this symbol,
there it was. The whole office heard me yippeeing it in my office. That
flag will come in very handy in the future! Thank you very much for your
help. p.s. it is 2004, I didn't notice the error in my typing until you
pointed it out.

Hi Kimberly -

I don't think you're using Word 2000 on a Mac as it is a Windows version -
more likely Word X or 2004. As long as you're in OS X, though, you can first
try Word's Insert>Symbol to find the character you're looking for.

If it isn't there (and may very well *not* be), you can use the OS X
Character Palette to locate & copy the character into the document. If you
don't have the feature activated, go to the AppleMenu>System Preferences -
International - Input Menu and check the box adjacent to the flag for the
appropriate nationality/language (English U.S., English U.K., etc.). There
will be a small flag of that type appear on the Mac menu bar which you can
then click to select the Character Palette.
