Access '07

Microsoft's Access web site will give you a better picture of what is new
and wonderful about '07. You'll need to decide for yourself if it is worth
it. I happen to like some of the new features very much. I also dislike
some of the new features very much. You might say that I am conflicted. On
balance, I would say the pluses outweigh the minuses and there is great hope
for the next release. This release of Access and Office presents a brand
new way of interacting with the desktop applications. First versions with
changes of this magnitude frequently have rough edges. The ribbon, which I
like very much in concept, simply annoys me because it doesn't ever seem to
show what I am looking for. So, for me, it doesn't live up to its promise.
I can survive in Access because it is the application I use day in and day
out but Excel and especially Word simply mystify me. For those
applications, I had always in the past been able to find what I needed by
searching the toolbars and menus but things that I do all the time don't
seem to be doable any more. One of these is turning paragraph marks on and
off by clicking a button. I have an Access application that automates Word
and pushes data to form fields and bookmarks in documents. When formatting
these documents initially, you need to be very careful to not select
paragraph marks accidentally because if you do, you can cause truly strange
formatting errors when the app pushes values to the bookmarks. Word seems
to store formatting information in paragraph marks and if you overlay one,
you can totally mess up the formatting for a whole section.
