Access 2000 is extremely slow to create a new database

I have a user who uses Access 2000 on his Windows 2000 system quite
often. Whenever he goes to create a new database, Access 2000 is
extremely slow in creating this database. This is what happens.

At a blank gray screen, he will click on the New button on the toolbar
to get the dialog box that presents him with the "General" and
"Databases" tabs to create a new database. He just creates databases
using the "Database" icon on the "General" tab page. When he clicks
on the "Database" icon and then clicks the "OK" button to create the
database, it takes around 5 minutes before the "File New Database"
dialog window comes up which allows him to name the database and save
it somewhere. Yes, 5 minutes! I could not find any information about
this at the Microsoft KB site, but that's not surprising.

He's running Access 2000 on a Windows 2000 machine. We're on a
Microsoft/Novell network.

Has anyone ever seen this problem before? Any help is appreciated.
Thanks.

Hi

I'm not sure if the delay is Access related since it occurs at the point
where file/folder explorer is to come up (i.e. File New Database).

Do you have active antivirus on? Do you create the database on a network
folder?
What happens if you try to create a database without being connected to the
network (ie. not logged on the network)?

Hi Immanuel,

Thanks for replying.

Yes, it occurs right before the "File New Database" window comes up as
you've said.

Antivirus. Yes, we have McAfee v7.0 running, but I have that running
on my computer as well, and when I start a new database with Access,
this doesn't happen to me. Just on this user's computer.

Yes, he usually saves his databases on a network folder, but
everything is fine once the database has been created and saved on the
network. Access is perfectly fine when he's using a database that's
saved on the network. Another strange thing (I think it works this
way) is that if he creates a new database using the introductory
window when first starting Access, it creates the database quickly.
(I'll have to check on this to make sure it does work okay like this.)

As far as trying to create a database while not being logged on to the
network, I'll have to try that and get back to.

Thanks for your post. I'll get back to you with a follow-up post.

Hi Immanuel,

I must start off by first apologizing. I was way off on some of my
information.

First off, the delay doesn't occur right after choosing the "Database"
icon from the "General" tab at this initial dialog box. It occurs
before even getting this dialog box. Right after he clicks on "File >
New", or clicks on the "New" button on the toolbar, is when the delay
occurs. It takes 5 minutes before this initial dialog box comes up.

About being able to create a new database using the window when first
starting Access, I was correct. Whether he's on the network, or off
the network, he is able to create a new database quickly using this
method.

I took him off the network like you suggested and you were right.
When he's off the network and he goes to start a new database using
either "File > New", or the "New" button on the toolbar, everything is
quick like it should be. I then connected him back to the network and
tried it again, and it was immediately slow again when trying to
create a new database.

Why do you think this is? I will try and do more research on the
Microsoft KB now that I know this, but if you have any ideas, I would
appreciate hearing them. Thanks so much.

Hi Ryan,

Based on the fact that the problem disappear when the machine is not
connected to the network. I would have to think that it's worth looking at
the environment in which the machine is running. Is the machine up to date
with Service Packs both for Office2000 and Win2000? How does this machine
compare to other machines without this problem?

I would look at the network drivers, protocols setup and compare this
machine with other machines.

Hi Immanuel,

Thanks again for replying.

I will look into the Service Pack levels for Office 2000 and Windows
2000. I'm pretty sure that they are probably not up to date.

As far as protocols, it is the same as all of the other computers on
the network.

I will check out those Service Packs, though, and post back. Thanks.
