Peer-to-peer network (all XP Pro, Office 2000 SP3) with
back end data database and mdw security file on one m/c
and front end database on all m/c. Has worked fine for
months until compacting back end data database. Still
works fine on m/c with data database but on networked m/c
now get error "The Microsoft Jet database engine cannot
open the file 'P:\Databases\data.mdb'. It is already
opened exclusively by another user, or you need
permission to view its data."

Reinstated uncompacted database and all ok. Will need to
compact sometime and don't know what has happened.

Note that help shows Jet 4.0 but DBEngine.Version returns
Jet 3.6???

Check the permissions on the P:\Databases folder. When you compacted the
resulting file inherited its permissions from the folder, and may have been
set to read only. Ensure there are full permissions on the folder.

Thanks but not the answer. Behaviour is consistent as
repeats on quite separate user and development
installations.
