Access 2000 & WinXP

Hi All:

Here is a strange one: I am running a peer-to-peer network
(7 PCs) and added a machine with WinXP Pro as "server",
where my Access file is located. The .MDB (version 2000)
file is in a shared folder (//Server/Shared/). Everyone
on the LAN is able to use the MDB file w/o any problems.
However, as soon as I use "Compact and Repair", no one on
the LAN accept the one using the host PC is able to access
the file (no pun intended!). "File not found" -even though
you can see the file from all other PCs (via Network
Neighborhood). I have to recreate the "shared" folder and
again share it and then it works just fine. I did not
have this problem when my "server" was a Win98SE or I do
not have problems with any other files in the
same "Shared" folder.

I have come to a conclusion that it has to do with Access
2000 + WinXP Pro. Any solution other than recreating
folder everytime I "Compact and Repair" the database? I
am using the latest Jet versions on all PCs.

Thanks for you help.

Check the permissions you are granting on new files in that folder.
It may be that permissions on new files are granted only to the creator of
the file.
When you compact and repair an mdb file, it is copied to a new location,
then the old file is destroyed and the new one renamed. In effect, this is
creating a new file, so it will be assigned the default permissions for a
new file in that folder.

The issue is not the Access file, but the folder. When I
recreate the new folder, I just move the same Access .MDB
file from the "defective" folder in the new folder and it
works fine on the network. It is bizzare! Happens only
in WinXP and not Win98SE.

Hello Shishir,

I have done a little search myself and found a similar thread here:
http://groups.google.nl/groups?hl=n...c348da%2454c171e0%24a001280a%40phx.gbl&rnum=6
(if it doesn't come through go to Google Newsgroups and type "shared access
database no longer shared after compact" withouth the quotes.)

Sounds like there's either a bug in Windows XP or it's got something to do
with NTFS, one of the posters added a link on that. Can you confirm working
with the NTFS filesystem and what version of Windows XP you are using
(Home/Prof, Service Packs etc).
I think you should also look into McDermott's suggestion, what he said is
linked with the NTFS issue. As you said the issue is with the folder but
that affects the file characteristics of the files it contains.

I can't really help any further, I hope you nail the problem.

Regards,
Willem van der Berg.

Hi Willem:

You are correct. Yes, I am on NTFS and XP Pro. The post
you suggested is identical to mine (except for XP version)

Some one sent me an email suggesting to re-install Jet. I
will try that and let you know. Regards.
