Access 2000

I have taken home an Access 2000 db to work on. But when I try to open it, I
get the following message. "You do not have the necessary permissions to use
the ***.mdb...". I do not even get to the screen to input a password. I am
logged on as administrator.

The database is probably secured. You'll have to have the workgroup file
associated with the database, as well as a valid username/password account
(note: this is NOT a Windows account, and has nothing to do with your
Windows permissions). The account you use will also have to have the
necessary permissions to enable you to perform design on the database
objects. You should be able to get this information from the same source
that provide you with the 2000 db.

If your source isn't sure of the workgroup file to provide, you can review a
shortcut used to open the database (if there is one) ... the Target will
sometimes tell you which workgroup is being used to open a database. If not,
you can try running the wrkgadm.exe file (the Workgroup Administrator app)
to determine which workgroup the machine is currently "joined" to ... you'd
do this on a machine that can acutally open and run the database.

Hi Scott,

I am still unable to open it. I grabbed their secured.mdw file from their
system. And the 'properties' to the database which reads :
"C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office10\MS Access.exe" "C:\My
Documents\Clickthis.mdb"/WRKGRP "C:\My Documents\Secured.mdw"

I set up my system to use WRKGRP as the group, put the db in the same My
Documents folder, and put this same properties in my version's db properties.
I am running W2K, they are running Win XP, but that should not make a
difference. I know the computer login and password, and the database
password, but never get to that point. I really don't know what else or how
to do anything else. And if I can't get it open, I will have to turn down
the job. I can run wrkgadm.exe on my system, but on theirs must go thru
system folder to see grp info which just tells me the grp name. No
wrkgadm.exe in XP.

Really do appreciate your help.

Thanks for your reply. But i have tried doing as you say and I still cannot
open the db. Their shortcut shows as “C:\ProgramFiles\Microsoft
Office\Office10\msAccess.exe†“c:\my documents\clickthis.mdbâ€/WRKGRP
“C:\MyDocuments\secured.mdwâ€

I have created and then logged in under the workgroup WRKGRP on my system,
copied their secured.mdw file to my system, and given my shortcut the same
properties. I know their system and db logins and passwords, but never even
get to the password. Same security message as before. If I cannot get
into this db, I lose the contract. They are running XP and I am running
under W2K, but that should not make a deference other than that they do not
have the wrkgadm.exe file. Must log and change groups on XP thru system
folder. I do not know what to do next or how. Would greatly appreciate more
help.

That should be ...MSAccess.exe"....(note no space)
Also....\Clickthis.mdb" /WRKGRP (note the space before /)

Maybe. Usually there isn't a c:\My Documents in either W2K or Win XP. My
Documents comes in the form of
C:\Documents and Settings\username\My Documents

In any case, do you really have a folder C:\My Documents (and is that where
you copied Clickthis.mdb and Secured.mdw?

No wrkgadm.exe in XP.

wrkgadm.exe is installed based on the version of Access, not windows. They
are running 2000 so you'll find wrkgadm.exe. You are running Access 2002,
and the workgroup administrator is built in to the Tools, security menu.

Fix the shortcut, verifying the location of the three files.
