Access 2002 defaults to Japanese input

I have Windows XP with the Asian IME installed. I also
have Office XP Professional (2002) installed.
I've just started using Access on this computer and I
find that the text entry mode for Tables causes the IME
to switch to Japanese automatically. If I change it to
English, enter text, and then move to the next field it
switches back to Japanese.
This behavior doesn't occur with any other application
I've tried, not even Word or Excel.
