Access 2002 front, Access97 backend

I have an ACCESS 97 front and backend running on 2 WIN98 machines. With the
backend on oneof those PCs.

Recently I installed ACCESS 2002 on WIN XP machine that now has the front
end of the application in ACCESS 2002.

Are there any problems whereby the backend has not been converted? So far I
can't see any problems.

I can see the Win 98 PCs still using ACC97. Any problem having 2 different
versions of front-ends?

I'm told that there is an impact on performance when the application and
data files are different versions, but I have never found the difference to
be noticeable myself. Other than that, the only issue I'm aware of is that
if you make modifications to the application you'll need to make them to
both versions. The safest option will be to make the modifications using the
earlier version (Access 97 in this case) and then convert the modified MDB
to the later version.

I have not noticed a speed difference either and the changes are always made
to the 97 version first as you said.

No problems, but...
Although Access has been specifically designed to handle situations
like yours (A2002 FE on A97 BE), MS for many years has been reluctant
endorse simultaneous use of different Jet versions at the same time.

I think that, even though the only specific known problems have been
with Jet 3.0/Jet 3.5 and Jet 2.x/Jet 4.x, there are perhaps just too
many different versions of Jet (once you include all the versions
and all the service packs) for anyone to be sure that they are all
completely compatible with each other.

Be aware (of course) that you will only be able to repair/compact the BE via
the older version. If you intend to distribute willy-nilly, some sites may not
have that capability, or the one person who has older version has their office
locked, say.

Oh well, I came across it <sigh>, and repair/compact is not unknown if a
system goes down <big sigh>

Newer versions are perfectly capable of compacting older versions.
