access 2003 does not see a printer on the network

using windows xp sp2, hp lj4 on the network. all other programs on the
computer use the printer ok. access says there is no printer. trying to print
or preview or page setup does nothing. a local printer on the usb port works
ok in access. if I make the local printer the default, I can then use page
setup to chose a specific printer and print to the network printer. i have
reinstalled and repaired access, checked office update for updates.
