I have no experience with access but I would like the database to include a
units field after the quantity field to specify Gallons,each,box...etc.
I am following the directions in the help box to create a new field but am
not having any luck??? is there a lock on this template? or is this just too
complicated of a thing to do for someone with limited experience?

First, just below the ribbon see if you have a "Security Warning" with
an "Options" button visible. If so click on the "Options" button and
then click the "Enable this content" radio button and then click OK.

I assume you have the "Inventory Transactions List" visible. Close
that by clicking the "x" just above the "Filter Favorites" text box.

Now in the "Inventory Navigation" pane click the drop down arrows to
display the "Supporting Objects". Find the table named "Inventory",
single click to highlight it, then right click to show the pop up menu
and choose Design View. Now in the Field Name column enter Units and
the Data Type should default to Text which is fine. Towards the botom
of the screen you may want to change the Field Size to something more
reasonable, say 12. Click the "x" to close the inventory table then
click yes when propmted to save changes.

Now in the navigation pane under the "Inventory" group open "Inventory
Transaction List" in design view. On the ribbon click add existing
fields and scroll through the Field List that pops up to find the Unit
field that you just created and drag it onto the open "Inventory
Transaction List" form. On the left side of the ribbon click the
"View" drop down arrow and click on "Form View. drag the Unit column
to rearrange as you desire then either do a Ctrl-S or click the save
icon to save the changes that you made.

I noticed that when you add your first item to the blank database the
"Inventory Details" form will be presented to allow you to enter the
item data so before you will want to add the "Unit" field to this form
also using the instructions above.

Good Luck.
