Access 2007 upsizing fails with SQL Server Management Studio 2008

Is there a fix short of uninstalling the version of sqlexpress installed by
SQL Server Management Studio 2008 - is there a functional earlier version of
sqlexpress? The Access error message says specifically it will not work with
this version.
