Access 2K opening when double clicking 97 shortcut

Greg

My set up is this. I have installed Office 97 and Access
2K on a single box. Of course access 2k was installed in a
seperate folder called "Office2k". Now I have a problem.
When I double click a shortcut on the desktop that used to
be a Access97 .mdb file it is wanting to open using 2K. Is
there a way to prevent all my 97 mdb's from doing this. I
only use one 2K mdb presently.

Any help is appreciated.

Thanks!

Hi, Greg.
When I double click a shortcut on the desktop that used to
be a Access97 .mdb file it is wanting to open using 2K.

When double-clicking a file or a shortcut, one is telling the operating
system, "Open this file using all of the default settings, because I don't
need anything more." So, the operating system checks the Windows Registry
for the "file association" value to determine which application opens that
type of file, then checks what the default command is to open a file when
this application is launched. Since Access 2K is the most recent Access
application installed on your computer, Access 97 doesn't exist in these
"default settings."

If you want to use anything other than these simple, default settings, then
you can create a shortcut with the following syntax:

"<Full path to Office 97>\MSAccess.EXE" "<Full path to DB>\MyDB.MDB"

If you want to set Access 97 as the default application on your computer,
the list of steps to make it seemless is far more than can be written in a
simple News Group posting, so I'll refrain from doing so.

HTH.
