Access 97 on XP

Steven

I have a computer with XP Operating system and XP Office which has Access
2002 on it. I want to put Access 97 on it also so I purchased 97 Office, an
OEM version. I tried to install just the Access97 off the Office 97 disk on
to the machine. When I went to run Access 97 it said "Cannot start access
because it does not have a license on this machine." Why did it do that?

Is it because Access97 will not work on XPOperating system or did I not set
it up properly?

How do I set up the computer so I can have both Access 97 and Access 2002
working on the same machine? Do I have to set up the machine's Operating
System as Windows 95 or 98 or 2000 or something so I can use Access 97?

Thank you very much for your help.

Also he needs to uninstall Office XP first; install Office 97; the reinstall
Office XP or there could be problems. When installing either O97 or OXP he'll
need to change the default directory of at least one of them to keep from
overwriting. He'll also need to say no to the offer to uninstall the previous
version when installing OXP.

Then there's the whole problem of A97 databases starting up in AXP by
default. The answer is to use shortcuts that specifically point to the A97
MSACCESS.EXE file and the A97 .mdb file.

Actually, Jerry, the order of installation doesn't actually matter, as long
as each installation is into a different folder.

I've always been told that it made a difference and, having always done
earliest to newest, never had a problem.

Maybe it's an old DBA tale!

I know. Most of us used to maintain that, but Tony Toews has been
deliberately installing out of order with no ill effects.

My personal notebook computer (XP Home) has both installed (A97 first,
followed by A2003), and it works flawlessly. My office computer (XP
Pro, on Windows network with security policies invoked) was installed
in the reverse order. (A97 is non-standard software).

When I launch A2003, it always attempts to run the Install process
again. If I allow the Install to continue, then A97 refuses to work
afterwards. However, if I cancel the Instal, A2003 continues to load
properly and A97 is unaffected. My workaround is to always hit the
Cancel button on the Install dialog whenever launching A2003. It's a
PITA.

I had the same problem on my previous office computer (Win2000 Pro),
and the two versions were probably (!!??) installed in the opposite
order.

Any idea what I can change, or ask the IT people to investigate in the
enforced policies, to fix this?

I seem to recall hearing about this (the "Install process" repeatedly
starting up) in conjunction with the latest SP for Office 2003, but I'm
afraid I can't find details anywhere. I'll keep looking, though. Sorry about
that...
