WOW... 2 hours !!!!
Well first thing is that you are using a different JET Database Engine in
AccessXP versus Access97 (Jet 4.0 vs Jet 3.5)
I recommend that get the updated version of the JET Database Engine, see

But 2 hours?? It's very possible that JET 4.0 says this is how we'll handle
whatever data manipulations you are doing vs how JET 3.5 used to handle it.
Other than rethinking the 2 hour data manipulation routine you are
performing, I can only suggest that you break up the routines and perform
Compact/Repair in between the routines.
