I have tried opening some of the sample db's on the
microsoft office home page but recieve a message
"unrecognized file format". Does each version of Access
have a different format? Is it possible to convert or is
an upgrade to a later version inevitable?

Yes, there is a different file format for each version and you cannot use an
older version (say, Access 97) to open a newer version format.
Is it possible to convert

If you know someone who has a version of Access that is newer than yours,
you could ask him or her to convert the sample database to your version.
This *might or might not* work, as features, properties, functions, etc., in
the newer version may not be present in your older version of Access and
these will not convert.
or is an upgrade to a later version inevitable?

Probably, yes. You may not be aware of a convenient feature offered in
Access 2002 (XP) and, I believe, 2003, which allows you to create databases
in Access 97 and 2000.
