Access and Excel: Importing Spreadsheets

We use Office 97. Recently we upgraded to Windows XP,
and since then have had some problems with our Office 97
program. (Computer tech simply transferred everything
from our old 98's on to new hard drives.) This AM I
attempted to import an Excel spreadsheet into Access
(something I have done mnay times). I was able to follow
all the usual steps using "Import Table", including
seeing what I was importing. However, when the process
was finished and I opened the table, there was no data.
I am unable to reach anyone at Microsoft and there
appears to be no specific answer in the MS Knowledge
Database. I am in the middle of a data entry project
where I must be able to import an Excel spreadsheet into
Access, so I need to resolve this ASAP.
