Access compact error

Whenever I compact an Access2003 database (mdb) file that I have just
closed, where that mdb includes mde references, Access2003 fails and
restarts.

So far the compact action has always been successful.

However, I cannot find any entries in the Knowledge Base concerning
this type of fatal error.

Has anyone else had this problem?

Are you talking about the compact on close setting? If so turn off that piece
of junk now! Manually compact and repair the database when needed (which is
seldom more than once a month).

Go out to MS and download the JetComp 4 utility. Use it to compact and
repair the database.

The problems I'm having are with the manual compact option.

In that case use Microsoft's Jetcomp utility and see if that works.

Tried it but I still get the same error.
This happens with any mdb file I have that includes VBA modules with
references to mde files I have created.

All the mdb's run fine, I only get the problem when I compact a mdb
file after having used it. My guess is that some runtime connection
between the mdb and the mde is not being released when I close the
mdb. I notice that when the compact process fails I always see an ldb
with the same name as the mde file left behind. Deleting the remnant
ldb makes no difference.

Compacting mdb's that do not have mde references does not fail.
Ditto any mdb's that DO have mde references, but which I haven't
recently opened.

I never use the compact-on-close option.

I'm using XP Home with SP2, fully patched.
