Access crashes when I try to import an excel file

I tried importing the SAP dump as a .txt, and as an .xls. I cleaned up the
file so it is strictly tabular format with the same type of content in every
column (field), just like an Access table. I reduced the number of lines from
5,000+ to only 250 to try to troubleshoot. Every time, Access crashes. Am I
missing an Add-in?

Thanks so much for responding. I am using Excel 2003, Access 2003 (Access
2000 file format). So far I have been trying to do this using File>Get
External Data>Import and trying Table>New>Import Table.

I used to do a job like this daily about 5 years ago - and I kind of recall
using an import specification. That may do the trick.

Even so, I still don't understand why Access crashes when I try to import
the Excel data that is in perfectly tabular format.

I've vetted that as well. I imported the Excel file Access 97 just to check
that. The import wizard identified two field labels with problems, but still
imported the file successfully by renaming the fields. After that import
completed, I shut down Access 97, opened the Excel file, fixed the cells,
saved, and tried Access 2003 again. Still no luck. Access crashed for the
27th time. That's funny because today is the 27th and it's my birthday.

In Help, I found a link for troubleshooting importing data. The lead I am
trying to work is the "wizard disappears". I'm doing a search right now for
the dll. However, the problem and hotfix appear to only apply to Access 2002.

I don't see any other links that indicate the specific problem I have -
Access shutting down (backing up, and sending error report).

I also searched Help for import specification. That turned up pretty dry. A
bunch of references to the same importation instructions that are not working
for me. Can you point me to any reference material?

Is this issue maybe because I have Access 97 still installed? I didn't
realize I still had it until I looked through my program menu in desperation.

Thanks for helping me with this - trying to apply my CPE course training for
work as I go.

First, HAPPY BIRTHDAY!

Now on to business... Earlier versions of Access were MUCH more tolerant of
using Reserved Words as fields names. Access 2007 has zero toloerance. You
can check here for Reserved Words and see if any match your field names...

Also, certain characters will cause issues, such as comma, pound sign,
forward slash, etc... which is why I asked if your file contained any of
these characters. Doesn't sound like a Wizard issue because it's not gone,
the file just file to import.

Thanks Gina. I tried uninstalling Access 97 and that did the trick. I can
import fine now.
