Access creates new tables in my relationships

P

Paula

Access creates new tables when I close my relationship
window. I open relationships back up and the 3 new tables
are there. Two tables have the same name as an exsisting
table with the extensions 1 and 2 and the third table has
the name of another exsisting table with the extension 1.
The tables have relationships with a common table.

How can I fix this?

Thanks,

Paula

You don't need to: there are no extra tables.

What you are seeing are aliases for your tables when they are involved in
more than one relationship: it prevents having lines looping and crossing
all over the relationships window.

As Tim says, there's not really a new table: just a new icon on the
screen. You'll get this effect when you have three separate
relationships between a pair of tables. Sometimes this is valid; more
often it arises when you use Microsoft's misdesigned so-called Lookup
wizard to create a "Lookup Field" in one of your tables. The Lookup
field will create a new relationship between the table containing it
and the lookup table, *even if such a relationship already exists*.

If this is the case, simply select the Join lines (not the table icon,
but the line) of the redundant relationships in the relationship
window and click the Delete key. Accept Access' offer to permanently
delete the relationship.

I have the opposite problem; after adding multiple aliases for the same
table, after closing then reopening the relationships window, the aliased
are still visible, but the lines all connect to the first instance of the
table. Any remedies ?

Thanks
