Access database not multiuser with linked Excel (shared) spreadsh.

After linking an Excel spreadsheet (multiple sheets) into an Access 2003
database, Access does not allow multiple users to open the database. The
linked Excel file is a shared file. Does anyone know a work-around or is it
only possible to have a single user on an Access database with linked Excel
files?
