Hi, Phil.
Is it a possibility that you (or someone else) opened this MDZ wizard file
with another application other than Access, and then saved it? If so, then
that would explain why you're getting the error message that it's not in the
correct format. Access 2003 can open the database files from all earlier
versions of Access, so it's not a version compatibility problem as you might
have with Access 97 trying to open an Access 2K database file.
If the name "Microsoft Access" is not listed in the "Opens With" dialog
window, then you'll have to browse for it. If it's not located in the
default directory, then you'll need to search for which directory that it
was saved to when you installed Microsoft Office. To do so, use the Windows
"Search" feature to find the MSAccess.EXE file. When you do, follow the
directions I gave you in my last post and when you get to the part about
"Browse," just browse to the folder where your search shows the MSAccess.EXE
file is located, then select this file to associate the MDZ files with
Microsoft Access.
You can also fake the correctly formatted MDZ file temporarily just to set
the file association by changing the file name extension of an MDB file to
MDZ, then setting the file association (this should work because the MDB
file is a file format that Microsoft Access currently recognizes --
correct?), then changing the file name extension back to MDB afterwards.
And if worse comes to worst, then you can always uninstall Access and
re-install it again to automatically associate all Access-type files with
Access. Just make sure that you have your product registration key handy
for the re-installation. If you leave the rest of Office intact, then the
re-installation of Access should not prompt for a software re-activation of
Access 2003.
HTH.
