Open Windows Explorer.
Click on Tools + Folder Options + File Types.
Find the mdz extension in the registered file type list and change the
Open With there.

Hi, Phil.

You can easily reassociate the *.MDZ file type by first opening Windows
Explorer. (Right-click on the Windows "Start" button, then select "Explore"
on the pop-up menu to quickly open Windows Explorer, if you don't already
have it open.) Select the Tools menu -> Folder Options to open the "Folder
Options" dialog window. Select the "File Types" tab and scroll down to,
then select, the MDZ file type.

In the "Opens With" section in the middle of the dialog window, you'll see a
"Change" button. Select the "Change" button to open the "Open With" dialog
window that allows you to select an application. Select Microsoft Access on
the list and then select the "OK" button. (If Microsoft Access was not on
the list, then use the "Browse" button to browse for the MSAccess.EXE file.
The default directory for this file is: C:\Program Files\Microsoft
Office\Office11.)

Select the "Close" button on the "Folder Options" dialog window when you are
finished. Your icons for the *.MDZ files should now match the icons for the
other Microsoft Access file types.

I'm sorry I don't know the answer to your question but
the reason I looked at your post is that I can't get
Wizards to work at all.

I'm using Access XP and have reinstalled Office and have
upgraded service pack

Cheers

Hi, Alan.

In what way do the Wizards not work? Do you get an error message, or are
the Wizards just "missing in action"? Did they work in the past, or has
something changed and now they don't work any more? Are all the Wizards
broken or just some of them, like the control Wizards when designing a form
or report?

Does Access XP seem to work otherwise, or are there additional problems?
Have you installed Office XP Service Pack 3, or are you on an earlier
service pack? (Service Pack 3 caused some problems.)

What operating system are you using? If it's Windows NT, 2K or XP, then
your user ID may not have enough security permissions to use the Wizard
files. Logging in as a Windows Administrator (which has full permissions on
all directories) and using the Wizards successfully would show that it's a
file permissions issue.

With some more clues, we might be able to help you.

I have tried to "open with" MS ACCESS" and it give me an
error message: "the file is not in the correct format for
a Microsoft Access project". Iwould reset it to MS Access
if it would open with Access, but I still would like to
know how to reset it to the correct file type.
the "Microsoft Access Wizard" type isnt listed in
the "open with" dialog box.

Thanks for helping me to resolve this.

Hi, Phil.

Is it a possibility that you (or someone else) opened this MDZ wizard file
with another application other than Access, and then saved it? If so, then
that would explain why you're getting the error message that it's not in the
correct format. Access 2003 can open the database files from all earlier
versions of Access, so it's not a version compatibility problem as you might
have with Access 97 trying to open an Access 2K database file.

If the name "Microsoft Access" is not listed in the "Opens With" dialog
window, then you'll have to browse for it. If it's not located in the
default directory, then you'll need to search for which directory that it
was saved to when you installed Microsoft Office. To do so, use the Windows
"Search" feature to find the MSAccess.EXE file. When you do, follow the
directions I gave you in my last post and when you get to the part about
"Browse," just browse to the folder where your search shows the MSAccess.EXE
file is located, then select this file to associate the MDZ files with
Microsoft Access.

You can also fake the correctly formatted MDZ file temporarily just to set
the file association by changing the file name extension of an MDB file to
MDZ, then setting the file association (this should work because the MDB
file is a file format that Microsoft Access currently recognizes --
correct?), then changing the file name extension back to MDB afterwards.

And if worse comes to worst, then you can always uninstall Access and
re-install it again to automatically associate all Access-type files with
Access. Just make sure that you have your product registration key handy
for the re-installation. If you leave the rest of Office intact, then the
re-installation of Access should not prompt for a software re-activation of
Access 2003.
