Access Denied, but why?

This is for Word 2000. This friend is an author, not real computer savvy,
but he's written 5 books in Word so he's no beginner either. Since he got
his new computer (a Dell with Windows XP home) he's having problems with
Word files "suddenly" deciding that they are protected files to which he
does not have access! The file can't be copied, can't be opened at all.
The properties do NOT show that the file is restricted in any way.

This doesn't happen to all files--just one every once in awhile.

The only thing I can think of is that he names them stuff like
"agencynames.110203.doc" and there are two periods in the name...but that's
not a problem is it?

If you have a clue, let me know! Knowledge base doesn't.

I'm not that "savvy" either but I would suggest that the use of special
characters in the file name is not a good habit to get into.
What happens if he re-names the files without the extra period? If he needs
a delimiter then I'd suggest a dash or underscore (both have no effect).
