access fe to sql be odbc failed sometimes

how do i know if it is my programming or the network. Jet query to a linked
table with more than 30k records that returns 5 records based on the where
clause. Sometimes the query works sometimes i wait 5 minutes before i get
odbc failed. I have been quetioning the network as i also have a access fe
and be and it takes 5 minutes to run a query when the be is on the network
but when i put the fe and be on the same machine the query takes a second.
Help/suggestions. Thank you

Check the anti-virus software to make sure it is not interfering. It should
not be checking the transmission of data.

Make sure you have an index on the field(s) you are using to filter the records.

I would suspect the network if the same exact query fails one time and runs
quickly another time. I assume (you did not say) that you are talking about
the same computer running the query. If things run good on one computer and
consistently fail on another, you might want to have your IT folks check the
NIC card on the mis-performing computer.
