Access freezes when running query against 85000 rows

Mark909

Im trying to run a query against a database containing 85000 entries. However
Access keeps freezing when I try to do this. The query takes a few minutes to
run againts 12000 entries. Anyone know whats happending here? Is it just my
computer has insufficient processing power?

Unless your query is very complex 85 thousand rows should be trivial even if
you have no indexes.

First step in the investigation:
Where are the records stored? What is the physical location of the data?

Next step: post the SQL of your query (Menubar View: SQL) Copy and paste the
text to your message.

yep; that's right-- Jet can't handle the employee list at a typical
company without hanging.

I'd reccomend moving to SQL Server, and learning how to write indexes.

The dimwit hasn't used the product enough to know its capabilities, but,
heaven forbid that he should let not knowing anything prevent him posting.
I'd reccomend moving to SQL Server,

A lot of people have recommended that the dimwit actually study, and
actually learn to use, the products he's going to post about, but it is
completely clear that he hasn't even the intelligence to take good advice.
and learning how to write indexes.

How to "write" indexes? The dimwit doesn't even know that in Jet, indexing
is just a matter of checking a property to identify it and there are other
properties that can just be checked to define how that index works?

I agree with Aaron's suggestion about indexes however the portion of
his reply about SQL Server is utterly irrelevant to your situation.

Hmm. This is another message thread at news.aioe.org which does not include
any post from Aaron.

wow, so what you're saying is that I'm not a certifed DBA, and you
are?

I know my way around Access better than any of these silly so called
MVPs around here.
I just have a backbone, whereas these dorks are still stuck in the
90s.

Jet has become 100% obsolete, and it has been for a decade.

Anyone that tells you differently is too dumb to learn a modern DBMS.

Why do you want to know if Aaron is certifiable?

He's made no claims about his wife, nor her bra size. You have made claims
about your "certification" but you've never, not once, been able to link to
any proof.

If we were to assume Mrs. Toews' bra size were 44 FFF or that it were 27
A---, and our assumption was not true, wouldn't that be exactly the same case
as your certification?

I have a MCITP: DBA certification, and it's called libel / slander if
you sit there and say that I don't.

He knows i'm certified.
He's just waging a war against me because he's got no penis.

His dad bit it off back when he was 12.
