Access has encountered a problem A2003

BillA

[Running Access 2003 on XP w/SP3]
My database has a main form with a number of tabbed pages with subforms. I
use these forms to manage projects from start to finish. The main form is
tied to a large table that has in approximately 34 fields. Each subform is
tied to a separate smaller tables.

I have been experiencing an odd problem when moving from one tab to another,
Access experiences an error and I get “…Access has encountered a problem and
needs to close. What makes this odd is that it only happens on my and my
coworkers’ computers; it doesn’t happen on my personal computer. All
computers are running MS XP with SP3 installed.

This problem also occurs when I attempt to close a form that was opened from
the main form (using a button). This form (from Carda Consultants) builds a
hyperlink to an external document folder. With the main form in the
background, Access closes (with the same message) when I close this form.

The common denominator here is that the error occurs once data is placed in
a subform or hyperlink form, then simply tabbing from or closing these forms
causes the unexpected closure. As an added oddity – once I reopen the
database, I see the data has been captured in the field it was entered in.

I can’t understand why these problems occur at work but not at home? I
thought the problem was the hot fix that was released after SP3, but that
didn’t fix it.

I would appreciate any advice.

Thanks,
Bill

I neglected to mention the forms that cause the unexpected close of Access
are tied to the large table.

Hi Arvin,

I haven't split the db yet. It's still in the building stage. I plan on
splitting once all the business needs are incorporated. I have compacted and
repaired numerous times - no change.

I don't understand why it works at home, yet we have errors at work??

Thank you for your time,
Bill

Split it. Do it now before you corrupt it beyond repair.

The references on your home computer may be different. The Service Pack may
be different. There are a number of possibilities.

I usually start here:
http://www.allenbrowne.com/recover.html

I also usually make a new database and import in all the tables, queries,
forms etc....

If you use any special references check those first (maybe those files are
not on the
computers the app doesn't work on?)

I'll take your advice and split. I'll post a follow-up to let you know if
that corrected the problem.

Thanks again for your time and advice,
Bill

Hello Arvin,
I've split my db manually and using the wizard; no change. I don't
understand why this db works on my home computer without any problems, yet
unexpectedly closes at work.

I'm starting to think our work computers Access is set up differently than
my home application. Can you explain 'references,' SP3 differences and other
possibilities so that I can follow those ideas. I have the ear of our IT
office, and they are willing to help.

Thank you again for your time,
Bill

The best explanation of references that I know is Doug Steele's at:

http://www.accessmvp.com/DJSteele/AccessReferenceErrors.html

as for the service packs. There are a few problems with SP3 that require a
hotfix on some computers. Checking the Microsoft Knowledge Base for
problems, I find:
