Access just the number in cross-refs of numbered list items

How can I refer in a cross-reference just to the number of a list item?
(i.e. without the surrounding text that is shown on the "Number
Format" box of the "Customize Numbered List" dialog box).

Word seems to be able to suppress a trailing dot from this number, but
not anything else (like brackets).

Thanks much,

What you are looking for is a way to suppress all delimiters in a
cross-reference. I don't think this is possible, because that would
make it extremely difficult or impossible to read references including
multiple levels of numbering. Think of a cross-reference to item 1.1
without delimiters; it would look exactly the same as a reference to
item 11!

There's a switch in the StyleRef field that suppresses "labels" such as
Chapter and Section, but I don't think the Ref field has anything
equivalent, and I'm not sure even the StyleRef switch would deal with
brackets and other text as you wish.

The REF field has the \t switch for the purpose you described. But the
OP asked for more -- too much more, I think.
